What is an SLE?
An SLE is a Specialist Leader of Education who is an outstanding middle or senior leader.  They have excellent interpersonal skills and can come from any educational setting. Please be aware that although the SLE has to be an outstanding teacher, the school may not be.

What is the criteria to be an SLE?
  • Outstanding middle or senior leader.
  • Experience of having coached and mentored others within your own school and in other schools.
  • Experience of whole school improvement both within your own school and in other schools.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Have specialist subject knowledge in required area/areas.

What does an SLE do?
SLEs focus on developing leadership capacity. This may be done through one-to-one or group support and could involve a variety of activities, such as:
  • Facilitate training.
  • Develop middle and senior leaders so that they can improve practice in their own schools.
  • Coach and mentor individuals or groups to improve teaching and learning.
  • Produce resources to support better practice.
  • Regularly share good practice with other SLEs.

What time commitment is expected?
We acknowledge that SLEs are extremely conscientious and committed to their own class therefore any time out of school is at the headteachers discretion.
Models and types of deployment will vary.  For example, within STEP, SLE deployment has varied between 1 day for the preparation and delivery of a course to regular half day drop in over the course of a term when providing school to school support work.

Are there any cost implications?
You will be pleased to hear that there are no costs involved in the SLE application process. When deploying an SLE, where ever possible schools will be reimbursed for any supply and travel costs incurred. In fact, you will be getting regular free CPD for your school for both the individual SLE and also for other staff in your school.

What are the benefits for you?
  • Sense of achievement and the opportunity to make a positive difference to the learning of pupils outside of your own school.
  • Accredited SLE status which is nationally recognised and desirable on applications.
  • Ongoing, free CPD to support your professional development.
  • Regular peer support through our network of SLEs.

What are the benefits for your school?
  • OFSTED acknowledge that having an SLE is a strength.
  • The chance to learn from ideas and approaches used in other schools.
  • Developing your SLEs coaching and facilitation skills.
  • Opportunity to network with other middle/senior leaders.
  • Development of skills and knowledge that can benefit your school.
  What are the next steps?
  • Speak to your headteacher about your desire to become and SLE.
  • Identify the areas of need from your skills audit and ask your headteacher for opportunities to address these in advance of completing the application. FWTSA can also provide support to help individuals meet the application criteria.
  • FWTSA SLE applications are now open and the closing date for applications is Friday 22 January 2021.
  • Interviews will take place on Wednesday 10 and Thursday 11 February 2021.
